WordPress: Change wp-admin folder name

WordPress is great! It’s no doubt. But unfortunately it still doesn’t have many quite necessary features. One of them is the ability to change wp-admin folder name, which is the admin directory as you probably already now. After searching for several hours on the internet without any success I started thinking of ways how to change my wordpress admin directory name. In this small tutorial I’ll show how to do it. Before starting the tutorial I have to say that this is rather complicated way and there may occurred some bugs. Anyway I have tested it and didn’t found any. So let’s start.
All we have to do is to search “wp-admin” in all wordpress files and change it to what we need to use as a admin directory name. Let’s name it for example “profile”. There are over 50 files to change. It’s practically impossible to find all these files manually so we need this great software called “grepWin” (Download). After installing this software right click on your wordpress folder and then choose “grepWin…” (see image below)
Then type “wp-admin” in “Search for:” box and “profile” (or anything you wish) in “Replace with:” and click “Replace”. This software will find every “wp-admin” and replace it with “profile”.
Now we are almost done. There is one file in /wp-admin/ directory called wp-admin.css. You have to change it’s name to “profile.css” (your_admin_directory_name.css).
Please note that some plugins and themes may also use the “wp-admin” name somewhere, so before you upload any theme or plugin don’t forget to scan it using grepWin and change every “wp-admin” to your chosen directory name.

I guess, this is not a wise move to change the hardcode of wordpress. What if, theres a new version of it and I/we want to update. This kind of technique will not sabotage the updating? just curios. But worth trying though… peace!
Yeah. your are right. the updates for wordpress will not cover on these changes. and does not guarantee 100% accuracy..

very nice you find a way to change the wp-admin folder name, if you know what you are doing on the codes I’m sure you know you will have to make another changes once you update the wordpress script or once you add new themes.

And I saw that this solution isn’t so good cause when surfing to wp-admin you are redirected to wp-login.php so You have to rename that file also.. But I think with grepwin you can change all the instanced where that filename occur also.. I’ll try it..
So TO DO for the developer community A WAY TO EASILY CHANGE THE WP-ADMIN FOLDER AND THE WP-LOGIN.PHP DYNAMICALLY so it will remain changed even after updating wordpress.

Don’t forget to change the names of all css files with wp-admin in them to your new name. They can be found in newname/css .
Let’s hope wordpress will make this easier in the future..

The truth is, GrepWin is the Windows GUI alternative to a unix command called “grep”. You type it into a terminal window. It wont be better to do a overwrite on .httaccess file? i dont now how because i am learning but it mus be a way to change this like that i guess, that way you dont have to manualy do it.

No offense, but this has got to be one of the dumbest “fix” I’ve ever seen for this problem. _EVER_.
Not only is this workaround inelegant (not to mention having to download and install grepWin), this will break wordpress updates and plugins.
I’m sorry, I’m a filipino web developer, too, and I’m all for pinoy power but you’ve got to think about these posts before letting it out to the world.

Hi, its all about what you prefer to do. If your site or blog is running fine, without the need of updating, may be for security you could change everything which contains wp-admin ==> yours-admin. But if you want to have updates, then you should install locally wordpress with the original wordpress install, the only way to get updates. Next to that you should have the ‘live’ site synchronized with dreamweaver on your local server. So every time wordpress has a update, you should change all the ‘wp-admin’ of all updated files and upload them with dreamweaver, wether its a plugin or theme or the wordpress install. It gets more difficult with plugins which are used for comment spam or plugins with autoposting to facebook….. can get very complex….
First you could start with changing the table wp-prefix, in the database. For security reasons, that should be sufficient to have your tables protected. Dont forget to change the prefix in wp-config.php also. Its something like an extra password, just make a complex one….
